New Zealand Fashion Week Is Here

New Zealand Fashion Week
Between 26 August and 1 September, Auckland is rocked by fashion fever. Now in its 19th year, New Zealand Fashion Week, the biggest must-do on the New Zealand calendar is officially upon us. A mix of both leading and emerging designers will be getting into their groove on the catwalk and bringing the joy of a fully-fledged fashion week to Aotearoa. If however, like me, you thought this event was by invitation only, then I’m the bearer of great tidings – it’s not: there are plenty of events for which fashionistas across the land can grab a ticket and join in the fun (www.nzfashionweek.com).

While the shows during the week are for delegates, over the course of the coming weekend, starting on Friday, there are some spectacular events that are open to the public. Bringing us a glimpse into spring/summer 2019 trends, these will all take place in the Auckland Town Hall and across Aotea Square. From the Resene Designer Runway Show to a Designer Pop-Up sample sale, anticipation is high. In addition to all this fun and shenanigans, later in the month (27 September) the fashion fix is taken up a notch or ten with the NZ Fashion Week Gala, a black tie charity event being held at Sky City. Although not actually part of the week itself, it aims to be Auckland’s answer to the lauded New York Met Gala. The evening will feature a compilation from NZFW runway shows, plus guest speaker Elle Macpherson. So if you’re feeling flush, benevolent, or both then this is for you.

There are many reasons why New Zealand Fashion Week has become such a big deal, not just to designers and buyers, but also to followers of fashion across the land. Whereas once it really was solely the stomping ground of industry insiders, with a more diverse guest list, and of course the power of social media, it now allows designers the opportunity to really get their brands phenomenal coverage, and on their terms. It’s an incredibly exciting platform from which both NZ and International designers get to showcase their wares. The emphasis isn’t however, just on the designers and their collections. This year there’s a drive on sustainability, diversity and inclusivity. Hot topics in every arena, but particularly pertinent in the world of fashion.

With the host of amazing designers on show, there are just soo many to get excited about. However one newcomer that will be getting everyone a bit hot under the collar is Tuesday. This boutique brand was founded in 2015, and its signature look is feminine yet playful, the perfect mix of timeless fashion. Making its debut at NZFW, word is that the Resort / Spring 2019 runway collection that is shown will be available at stockists immediately after the show. And guess what – Wendys and Tilda are stockists, so get ready to get your finger on the buzzer! Another designer to watch for (and one that is also stocked at Wendys and Tilda) is fan favourite Kathryn Wilson. Always exciting and inspirational, her shoe collections hit the sweet spot time after time - so there’s no doubt that she will be wowing us with her fancy footwork. So ladies, sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
