If you haven’t started thinking about your cold weather coat collection yet, then the chances are you will be very soon. Coats have morphed from purely practical to the ultimate statement piece, and are right up there on the ‘must-have’ list. The good old winter warmer basically ranks as the most important sartorial investment for autumn and winter, and your choice will say it all about how you plan to face the months ahead.

 

There really is a huge choice this season, and whether you prefer a sculpted silhouette, a sporty feel or something just a wee bit kooky and crazy, absolutely nothing is off limits. Classic shapes are appearing in totally different hues and texture is a huge trend. Checks and plaids are on point, and the unprepossessing duster is making an entrance in bright colours and floor sweeping styles. The trusty trench is riding a fashion wave like never before, and we’re seeing a multitude of modern twists on this cult classic.

 

 

 

For everyday wear it’s hard to get past a Camel coat. Whether double-breasted or robe style, it can be thrown with pretty much anything and you’ll look good. If you love a retro feel then flared jeans with a skinny scarf will give you that 70s vibe. If you want to shake up your colour palette then pastel colours are strong and yet unexpected for autumn. But what better way to spice up a dull grey day than with a pale blue, pretty pink or soft green statement coat. Take this look from head to toe and you’ll have a pretty show- stopping monochromatic look.

 

 

 

Of course animal print is huge this season, and this look extends to outerwear. If you feel head-to-toe print is a little much, then steer yourself in the faux fur direction. The ‘teddy’ coat or jacket is not just super cosy to wear, but is just so versatile – transitioning from casual to smart with just a switch out of accessories.

 

 

If you didn’t think it was possible to be practical, stylish and fun, then watch and weep, because the Puffer coat reigns supreme. Cropped, mid-length, full length – all bases are covered. And surprisingly, this number is far more versatile, and less age specific than you may at first think. For street style think cropped puffer with mini skirt and mid-calf boots. Transform to an elegant look by pairing with a mid-length skirts or palazzo pants. For winter sport watching, team with a pair of jeans and a sleek sweater.

 

 

For those days where it’s not quite cold enough for a coat, then light cover is the name of the game. Raincoats and anoraks are trending, and with a bit of creativity their metamorphosis from ugly duckling to swan is complete. Whether waterproof or showerproof, a little imagination has definitely added a splash of sunshine to a rainy day.
